Crafting Freedom 2012 Schedule Summary

THURSDAY

  • Check-In at Crafting Freedom Registration Desk & Register at Hampton Hotel 3:00 – 6:30p.m. Welcome Dinner and Orientation. 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

FRIDAY

  • Tour Slave Quarters (Horton Grove) and Big Barn at Historic Stagville. Lecture on African–American religious life on the Plantation. Lunch. P.M. Bus to Milton, NC. Lecture on Thomas Day’s Work from a Cabinetmaker’s POV. Interactive activity at Milton Presbyterian Church. Landmark Tour of Union Tavern and Village of Milton. Evening Free.

SATURDAY

  • Tour Burwell School, girlhood home of Elizabeth Keckly. Lecture: “Elizabeth Keckly at the Burwell School and Beyond” by Burwell staff. Slave Narrative expert, Dr. William A. Andrews, will present a lecture on Keckly’s slave narrative in the context of the Slave Narrative gendre. Laurel Sneed will lead a discussion comparing the lives of Day and Keckly entitled: “Thomas Day and Elizabeth Keckly: The Connections in Hillsborough and Beyond.” P.M. “Get Acquainted with the Crafting Freedom Website” with Master Teachers at the Hampton Inn. Evening Free.

SUNDAY

  • Independent Study/ Instructional Planning by Grade Level over working pizza lunch. P.M. Lecture: A Hidden Host of African-American Artisans by Juanita M. Holland, art historian. Rotating Crafting Sessions: “By the Work of their Hands” with African–American Traditional Artisans, includes a Sewing Activity and Cabinetmaking Demo. Lecture: “Soul-Stitching with Nellie Chubb’s Miles, A Seamstress’ Story.” Evening Free.

MONDAY

  • Crafting Freedom Forum (Various Scholarly Lectures on the theme, “Crafting Freedom”at the University of North Carolina – Wilson Library.) P.M. Exploring the World of Black History Research in Presentations about collections at Wilson Library; Independent research/reading time. Dinner on own. “Open Mic” Night (participants share relevant content/ experiences with all.) Must pre-sign-up and this experience is required.

TUESDAY

  • Each participant shares his/her instructional plan ( 3-4 min. presentations); Reflection and Wrap-up. Receive Stipends. Hotel Check–Out by 1:00 PM. Vans to airport after 1:00.

    I live in Raleigh. Am I required to stay at the Hampton Inn or can I go home once the day’s sessions have ended?
